Michael R. Rose, D.Phil., is Professor of Evolutionary Biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine. He was the recipient of the President’s Prize of the American Society of Naturalists in 1992 and the Busse Research Award from the World Congress of Gerontology in 1997. Dr. Rose serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Theoretical Biology, Experimental Gerontology, and the Journal of Anti-Aging Medicine. He has written or edited more than 140 publications, including the books Evolutionary Biology of Aging (New York: Oxford University Press, 1991); Genetics and Evolution of Aging, coedited with Caleb E. Finch (Dordrecht, Boston: Kluwer, 1994); Adaptation, coedited with George V. Lauder (San Diego: Academic Press, 1996); and Darwin's Spectre: Evolutionary Biology in the Modern World (Princeton University Press, 1998). Dr. Rose has given more than 130 addresses at various conferences and symposia. His current research focuses primarily on the evolution of aging and the evolution of biological immortality, using fruit flies as an experimental system.
